City Guide - Columbus, Ohio

Before moving to the DC area we lived in Columbus. I didn't have any thoughts about Columbus before moving there. It just wasn't a city I had heard much about. Once we moved there I loved it. It does have some quirks, but every city does.

In fact, I have a funny story about that. In the first few weeks after we moved we spent a ton of time walking around our new neighborhood and exploring. I was convinced that although we weren't terribly close to The Ohio State University that we must be by some frat houses. I mean, why else would there be massive grills in people's yards covered with an OSU grill cover. Or three flags on the front of someone's porch proclaiming their love for OSU. I later learned that most people in Columbus have some connection to OSU. Either they went there, their parents went there or they work there. So, there is a LOT of OSU pride. I think it is a good thing, but something I just didn't understand when we moved there.

The people in Columbus are very friendly and very family oriented. A lot of people I met had family very close by, which is great for them, but honestly a bit of a bummer for me since when you live close to family you don't tend to rely on your friends as much. Thankfully I met a great group of girls who didn't have much family around, so it worked out.

The neighborhoods are amazing. Each one has a different demographic and feel to it. We lived in German Village and if we moved back, I would definitely want to live there again. It is beautiful, walkable and clean.

Last June my cousin and his family drove from Maryland to Seattle and stayed with family and friends along the way. They took about a month to do it and so they had some time to explore cities more than you would with a fast drive. They have mentioned numerous times that Columbus was their favorite stop. And I don't think it was because of the dinner I made. They fell in love with it too.

I can't wait to tell you more about Columbus, Ohio this week!
